Nederlanders willen geen segregatie, maar in de dagelijkse praktijk blijkt het integreren van kwetsbare groepen vaak moeilijk van de grond te komen. In het boek worden wensen, praktijken en effecten van mengingspolitiek verkend. Er wordt hierbij verder gekeken dan de gebruikelijke integratievelden onderwijs, werk en wonen. Zo wordt er bijvoorbeeld ook gekeken naar groepsoverstijgende contacten op speelplaatsen, in de sportkleedkamer, het buurthuis en thuis op de tweezitsbank. Naast een beschrijving van wat er al dan niet aan menging gebeurt, is er in het boek aandacht voor de vraag waar menging het meest nodig is. Door de weging van het belang van menging op verschillende terreinen, worden handvatten geboden om prioriteiten te stellen.
